Weight in the steps
Heavier than a squirrel, and almost always after dark. Sometimes it walks a short path, stops, and walks it again.
A slow walk across the ceiling, a vent pulled open, or a soffit corner peeled back by the gutter. Around Columbus that is a raccoon, and in spring it is often a mother with young.

Soffits, roof vents, and gable screens get pulled, not just chewed. Raccoons open things the way a person would, with less patience.
They pick a bathroom spot. That pile can carry roundworm. Do not sweep it into the air of the house.
They want dry, dark, and quiet. In spring they also want a nursery. An attic is all three, and nobody walks through it. From under the insulation, that is a better den than a hollow tree.
A loose soffit corner is enough to start, and they enlarge it on the way in. Houses along the Scioto, the Olentangy, and Big Walnut see this every year. So does any roof a tree can reach.
A trapped raccoon has to be released on the same property or euthanized. Relocating one is against state rules, and it does not close the hole. The next raccoon, or the same one if it was never inside the trap, uses the opening you left.
Young change the order of work. From about March into early summer the animal upstairs may be a mother. The kits cannot travel yet. Seal the only door and she tears another one, usually by morning. We look for that before any board goes up.
Raccoon droppings can carry roundworm eggs. The dust from a dry pile is the part you do not want in the air. No sweeping, no vacuum, and no kids in that insulation.
A small spot and a corner that has been used all season are different jobs. We say which one you have, and whether cleanup belongs in the same visit.
It would rather leave than fight. Corner it, or send a dog up, and a bite gets more likely. Bites need a doctor. Give it room and call us.
Only after the attic is empty, kits included. A patch over a family becomes a bigger hole. We check first, then close it with something sturdier than foam.
Ohio law says a captured raccoon is released on site or euthanized. A ride across town is not an option, and the opening would still be there when you got home.
The longer explanation, with sources, is in the guide Raccoons in the attic.
