If the dog came back famous, let us talk

Skunks dig under sheds, porches, and crawl spaces. The smell is the clue everyone in the house agrees on. The rest of the job is getting them out without a second chapter.

Signs it may be a skunk

The smell

Sharp, skunky, and hard to argue with. A light version can linger where they den, even on a quiet day.

A dug opening

A hole along a foundation, under steps, or beside a shed, with dirt fanned out. Often big enough for a cat, sometimes bigger.

Night digging in the yard

Small cones of dirt where they hunted grubs. Annoying in the lawn. More serious when the hole is under the porch.

They spray when they are stuck

A skunk would rather not spend the spray. It is for coyotes and, unfortunately, for dogs who did not read the room. If you corner one, block its hole, or send a pet under the shed, you are asking for the famous part.

Keep the dog inside. Leave the opening clear. If the skunk can come and go, we have a much better chance of moving it along without a scene.

Do not bury the problem

Filling the hole while a skunk is in the den traps it against your house. That is when people get sprayed through a crawl-space vent, or when an animal dies where you cannot reach it. We make sure the space is empty, then we close it with buried mesh or a solid skirt so the next digger gives up.

Spring dens may have babies. A mother skunk is not interested in your timeline, and the young cannot travel until they are big enough. We will tell you if we need to wait, and why. A short wait beats a very loud week.

What to do tonight

  • Bring pets in. Curiosity is expensive.
  • Do not block the hole, set off fireworks nearby, or soak the den with a hose.
  • Leave a light on in the yard if you need to walk past. Skunks would rather avoid you.
  • Tell us where the hole is and whether you have smelled spray or only seen digging.

Quick answers

The dog got sprayed. Is the skunk still under there?

Often, yes. Spray means it felt trapped. Keep the dog inside and leave the hole open. We will check whether anyone is home before we close it.

Can I dump mothballs down the hole?

Please do not. Mothballs are a bad idea around kids, pets, and the inside of a house, and they rarely solve a den. There is a calmer way that actually closes the entrance.

Let's make upstairs quiet again.
